Background
About Catharine E. Krebs
I'm a medical research program manager with the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, where I leading and execute science policy strategies to advance innovative and ethical nonanimal biomedical research. I monitor federal funding priorities, research strategies, and policies for opportunities to meaningfully engage agency leadership and staff, researchers, lawmakers, and the public. I have authored numerous Congressional statements and public comments to the NIH and other federal agencies. To support my advocacy efforts, I conduct mixed-methods research aimed at investigating the bias against nonanimal research. I also conduct bibliometric and research portfolio analyses to investigate animal- and nonanimal-based method use across biomedical research fields. I'm a Fellow of the Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics and a member of the American Public Health Association and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. I received my PhD in Human Genetics in September 2018 under the supervision of Dr. Ophoff with a psychiatric genomics-focused dissertation titled "The molecular signatures of bipolar disorder and lithium treatment." I have volunteer experience in non-profit mental health advocacy and homelessness outreach. During my PhD, I co-founded the Science Policy Group at UCLA, a student group dedicated to bridging the gap between academic researchers and policymakers on issues related to health, technology, and the environment. I also founded Brewin' Talks, a graduate student-only forum for research talks and networking opportunities. These experiences have provided me with excellent leadership and communication skills and have helped shape my empathic, human- and animal-oriented value system.
