About Catherine Deegan
Catherine has worked at TU Dublin since and is currently Head of Control Engineering in the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering with management responsibilities in teaching, programme development and research. Catherine has a primary degree and PhD in Applied Physics from Dublin City University, as well as a Postgrad Diploma in Clinical Engineering from Trinity College Dublin. She worked as a Biomedical engineer at St James Hospital, as well as previously holding teaching positions in DCU, TCD and Maynooth University. Applied research interests incorporate various sensor integration applications including, sensor fusion, computer vision, biometrics, biomechanics and associated wearable technology. She has supervised several Masters and PhD students and led a successful commercialisation venture involving an integrated photogrammetric/GIS system that led to technology transfer licencing and a successful spin-out company in 2013. In 2016-17, Catherine was seconded to Ireland’s National Forum for Teaching and Learning as the project manager to lead an interim review of digital capacity in Irish higher education. She is also engaged in pedagogical and practice research and completed an MA in Higher Education on the impact of assistive technology on Irish higher education practice. She was shortlisted for AHEAD Ireland's national Universal Design for Teaching and Learning in 2020 for her work in using universal design for learning in teaching research methods to undergraduates. Catherine also co-leads an Assistive and Inclusive Technology Community of Practice at TU Dublin.
