Even after 20-plus years of experience in print and online publications, I approach each assignment with fresh eyes—and a mind that's attuned to a writer's voice, an editor's vision, and especially the reading public. I'm extremely comfortable with words, and it shows in my work at magazines including Billboard, SSENSE, Teen Vogue, and Town & Country, as well as online news outlets such as Newsweek and Black Enterprise. I've copy edited novels and literary compilations: the longer, the better. I was interested in music, art, fashion, and esoterica long before I became a copy editor, so my job is an extension of the person I've always been. I'm invested in each piece, be it jargon- and stats-heavy (Billboard), breezy and in the know (Departures), or marketing/advertorial (Editorialist YX, Stripes). Producing clean copy is always the top priority; once that's done, I collaborate with production and art departments to ensure its visual readability. I like the autonomy of copy editing but readily communicate with teams across all departments.Writing my own stories is a challenge and a joy; my style is particular but inclusive. I've contributed book and music reviews and interviewed interesting people such as musicians black midi, Jane Siberry, and Jenny Hval; tennis great Jim Courier; painter Hunt Slonem; and even Josephine Baker's son. I occasionally publish a digital zine called SMOOCH, where I write about the songs, films, and creative periods that speak to me, and set them to original photographs, stills, and music.
