About Catherine MacLean

Catherine MacLean, MD, PhD is the principal at Healthcare Value Solutions, a consulting firm which advises providers, payers and policy makers. Dr. MacLean has extensive clinical and leadership experience in provider, payer and policy organizations. She was the Chief Value Medical Officer at Hospital for Special Surgery through 2024. At HSS she developed and led the HSS Center for the Advancement of Value in Musculoskeletal Care which was recognized by the World Economic Forum as a Value Innovation Hub. She also led the successful implementation of CMS' Comprehensive Joint Replacement episode payment program at HSS, which achieved the largest reconciliation payments in the US. She now advises HSS on value programs including TEAM.Dr. MacLean has particular expertise in health care value, quality and population health including strategic planning; implementation and program evaluation; formation and leverage of value propositions; and development of/advocacy for evidence-based policy recommendations fair to all stakeholders. She has significant operational experience managing large complex teams within matrixed organizations and demonstrated success in achieving quality and financial goals in value-based contracts, quality and utilization improvement, and the development/mentoring of clinical and nonclinical staff. She is expert in big health data with success in using it to understand quality, utilization, cost of care; inform value strategies; and to develop machine-learning-based models to predict health outcomes after specific procedures. She has deep expertise in musculoskeletal disease including care delivery; devices and drugs; and payment models.
