Background
About Catherine Marquez
I am a passionate field biologist with a focus on management of endangered, threatened, and sensitive species. Since 2020, I have gained diverse experience conducting wildlife surveys and habitat assessments across the United States. I have worked with a variety of target species, such as the northern spotted owl, Mexican spotted owl, cave-dwelling bat species, Rio Grande chub and sucker, and many others, while focusing on both habitat protection and species recovery. I’ve worked in diverse environments, ranging from desert and grassland to temperate rainforest and alpine regions, often in remote locations where I prioritize safety and environmental considerations. While working for the Forest Service, I often utilized ArcGIS software such as ArcPro, FieldMaps, and Survey123 to develop surveys for the wildlife and recreational departments. I have also contributed detailed data to reports that communicate project findings to stakeholders and scientific communities. In Washington, I led a project for the endangered Mardon skipper butterfly, collaborated with a geneticist, and shared findings to the Xerces Society. I have participated in various restoration activities, including preventing lakeside habitat degradation at a boat launch in Washington, invasive fish species removal and endangered fish repopulation in New Mexico watersheds, as well as invasive plant species removal in Nevada. My experience does extend to land stewardship activities, some of which involved tree removal projects to support sage grouse habitat in Nevada, and enhancing safety measures for the endangered Holy Ghost Ipomopsis plant during a wildfire incident in New Mexico. In my current role as an environmental scientist focused on bat species, I support projects involving wetland delineation, habitat and stream quality assessments, and post-construction mortality surveys. My work is grounded in a strong commitment to biodiversity conservation, habitat restoration, and data-driven management, and I am continuously seeking to grow my skills in environmental science and land stewardship.
