Background
About Catherine mc Laughlin
An experienced Occupational Therapist and Clinical Case Manager. Skilled in the assessment and treatment of people with complex needs, including cerebral palsy, acquired brain injury, spinal cord Injury and people who have seen an interuption to living their life because of an illness or injury. I have worked as a brain injury case manager for over 15 years and I provide medico legal reports for both care and occupational therapy. My passion is supporting people in finding solutions to barriers they experience, that limit them in living life, their way. My interventions may be as quick as a chat and a few suggestions like introducing a piece of equipment that allows someone to remain at home in the care of their loving family. Or a longer process like supporting someone in working out the logistics to have a round the world trip when they have physical or psychological challenges. Whatever the issues are I love supporting people to do the things that are important to them. I have gotten to know some amazing people over the past 30+ years and each new referral reminds me of our uniqueness. Therefore, we require unique solutions. My occupational therapy and case manager roles are complimentary and distinctive. Although as a practicing clinician, it has taken time to learn how to separate the two!( Its difficult to restrain myself from doing the doing of clinical intervention, when in my role as case manager) My career has allowed me to work with people and their families in England, Scotland, Wales, Hungary, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Spain and Saudi Arabia. I am extensively trained and experienced in managing teams, developing leadership in others and life coaching/mentoring/supervision. I have provided a Consultancy service to a Brain Injury Service for 14+ years. This is one of the roles I enjoy most. It utilises all my clinical, academic and leadership skills. The sense of achievement and satisfaction of being part of the team that facilitates people moving from nursing home environments, through a community rehabilitation model, to their own home is off the scale. In my career to date I have learned: 1.People know what they want and it's my job to support them in achieving their goals, regardless of their circumstances. Team work means leaving your judgements and opinions of others, system's or the circumstances at the door and focusing on a common goal for your client or a project. There is always a way.
