About Catherine McKercher

Catherine McKercher is a professor emerita of journalism and author. Her first career was as a full-time newspaper and wire service journalist, and freelance radio broadcaster, in Canada and the U.S. She joined the faculty at Carleton University in 1987 and retired in 2014. She is the author, co-author and co-editor of a number of books. These include "Shut Away: When Down syndrome was a life sentence," a critical examination of the institutional system for people with intellectual disabilities told through the life of her brother Bill;"Newsworkers Unite: Labor, Convergence and North American Newspapers," which looks at how journalists unions responded to the arrival of the digital age; three editions of "The Canadian Reporter" text book, with Carman Cumming and Allan Thompson. Her scholarly work focused on communication workers and the labor organizations that represent them. Books in that area include "Knowledge Workers in the Information Society" and "The Laboring of Communication" with her husband Vincent Mosco, and "Getting The Message: Communications Workers and Global Value Chains," with Vincent Mosco and Ursula Huws.
