REGULATE verb /ˈrɛɡyəˌleɪt/ 1. regulate something to control something by means of rules 2.[transitive] regulate something to control the speed, pressure, temperature, etc. in a machine or system. Not that I believe as a health professional working within the regulatory machine that I necessarily control the speed or pressure of what may come my way, I do enjoy working with rules. And I really enjoy the challenging aspects of identifying gaps, contradiction and ambiguity, the creative exploration of policy development and the satisfaction of applying change into improved and sometimes novel operation. This, combined with experiencing 30 years of joy and challenge as a Speech-Language Pathologist delivering client centred and team-based health care in pretty much every clinical setting imaginable, has gifted me the opportunity to establish and reinforce what the provision of safe, ethical and competent care should be. Suffice to say, I love working in health regulation.
