Starr holds a doctorate in Human Environmental Sciences from Oklahoma State University. While at OSU she worked closely with her advisor, Dr. Donna H. Branson, Regents Professor Emeritus. Her dissertation titled, Thermal Manikin Evaluation of Material Component and Design Features on Heat Transfer of Quadgard™, focused on the three different versions of Quadgard™ developed by Dr. Branson and her research team within the Institute for Protective Apparel Research and Technology at OSU. Her awards include: the Best Solution to a Design Problem Award at the International Textile & Apparel Association Annual Conference Design Competition, the HCII 2015 Best Paper Award for HCI Thematic Area (with Sheryl Brahnam, Jenifer Roberts, Loris Nanni, & Sandra L. Bailey) for the paper “Design of a bullying detection/alert system for school-wide intervention.”, College of Business (COB) Summer Research Fellowship, College of Natural & Applied Sciences (CNAS) Summer Fellowship for New Faculty Fellowship, and NASA Oklahoma Space Grant Consortium Fellowship.
