Background
About Chad Decuir
If I were to define myself in one sentence, I’d say,"I'm a professional problem solver specializing in out of the box thinking." I remember being like this in high school but it probably started earlier than that. I was captivated when I started taking computer classes. In CompSci 2 and 3 I would breeze through the curriculum just so that I could finally start working on each year's final project. My first and second major projects were a 3D version of Galaga written in Java and a 2D multiplayer space game where I wrote the server and engine entirely myself in C. I chose C because I had recently started as an Intern at this small engineering and manufacturing security company called Alula (formerly, IpDatatel) where most of their software was written in C. Alula provided me a fast paced environment with opportunities to learn new technologies, test multiple roles, and exercise my problem solving capabilities. I was able to grow and climb throughout the company rapidly, and gained valuable experience in many facets. As a backend developer, I was an instrumental part of a small team that transitioned a proprietary network of safety critical applications from handling around connections to handling over a quarter of a million connections at one time. This platform that once required constant maintenance and supervision is now fault tolerant, spans multiple geographical locations throughout the cloud, and can be interacted with through API endpoints. As an embedded developer, I learned to maintain and harden an assortment of embedded security system alarm translators using PIC32 microcontrollers and Telit CDMA/LTE modules while being mindful of how these devices were interacting with our platform. As a DevOps engineer, I designed, implemented, and/or reviewed various software deployments and code changes. I learned how to administer, maintain, and interact with relational and non-relational high availability database architectures (Mariadb Galera Cluster and MongoDB Replica Sets) sitting behind TCP load balancers. Because of my depth and the variety of software I’ve worked with, I’m now extremely proficient with Linux (Arch Linux and CentOS) and Bash/Shell scripting which I’ve used for the entirety of my career. I will always remember my time with Alula fondly and I am extremely grateful that I was able to grow with and be a part of such a wonderful team. And while this chapter of my life has now come to a close, I cannot wait for new opportunities to solve problems and to again be part of a fast moving team that presents the chance to learn.
