About Chanchal Bhattacharya

Dr. Chanchal Bhattacharya is a globally recognized One Health and Veterinary Public Health leader, whose contributions have shaped policy, research, and field implementation across Asia and beyond. With over 33 years of international and national experience, he has built bridges between animal health, human health, and environmental systems—translating scientific understanding into tangible impact for communities, governments, and development agencies. As Senior Advisor (Livestock Technology & One Health) at Heifer International, Dr. Bhattacharya has led programs linking sustainable livestock production, biosecurity, and antimicrobial stewardship with smallholder livelihood development. His work in partnership with FAO, World Bank, GIZ, BMZ, USAID, and Cargill has elevated India’s representation in the global One Health dialogue, aligning national actions with international frameworks for zoonotic disease control and AMR mitigation. He has made notable global contributions through: Policy and technical leadership in the World Bank–supported biosecurity and animal trade framework for the Republic of Maldives, strengthening regional sanitary and phytosanitary systems. Academic and institutional development, serving as Visiting Faculty for One Health at IIT Kharagpur and the Indian Institute of Public Health, Delhi, and contributing to curriculum design that reflects global One Health standards. Knowledge generation and dissemination, through international publications in Europe and Asia, including research on AMR, meat safety, zoonoses, and epidemiology published in Ukrainian, German, and Indian journals. Regional capacity-building, mentoring veterinarians, public health professionals, and development partners in disease surveillance, outbreak management, and cross-sectoral collaboration under the “One Health” paradigm. His achievements—including the Lifetime Achievement Award in Veterinary Public Health (Government of India, 2023) and the Dr. C. M.
