About Chaney Hill

An experienced reader, writer, communicator, and editor with advanced degrees and 6+ years of experience. I am an educator, writer, and researcher committed to social justice and equitable practices in the workplace and the classroom who studies public memory, all things Texas, and environmental justice (with a focus on local, place-based issues). I attended undergrad at Texas Lutheran University, where I earned a B.A. in Literary Studies and a B.S. in Secondary Education with a focus on English Language Arts. Building upon this, I pursued an M.A. in English Literature at Boise State University. Currently, I am in the final stages of completing my Ph.D. in English at Rice University, where my research revolves around examining public memory sites in Texas. Throughout my academic career, I have been honored to receive numerous fellowships, grants, and awards, which have been instrumental in my growth and development. Notable among these are the Diluvial Houston Initiative Pre-Doctoral Fellowship, the Fondren Library Fellowship, and the National Humanities Center Graduate Student Summer Residency. My interest in editing and publishing is reflected in much of my work. Currently, I serve as the Daily Editor and Book Reviewer for the Southern Review of Books. Additionally, I have worked as a researcher and copy editor for Lacy Johnson's publication,"More City than Water: A Houston Flood Atlas" and as a Diana Hobby Editorial Fellow for the academic journal Studies in English Literature, 1500-1900. Teaching has been a fulfilling aspect of my career, allowing me to share my knowledge and passion with students. At Rice University, I have served as an instructor of record for courses such as Environmental Studies 316: Environmental Film, English 260: What is American Literature, and FWIS 184: The Cultural Imagination of Texas. Before my time at Rice, I was an instructor of record at Boise State University, Lee College, and Goose Creek Memorial High School, where I taught English Composition I and II. Engaging in research has always been a driving force for me. As a research assistant for the Racial Geography Project at Rice University, I have been involved in illuminating the historical impact of slavery, segregation, and racial injustice. Moreover, I have had the opportunity to present my research findings at various conferences and academic events in addition to publishing academic research in various peer-reviewed journals.
