About Charee Peters

My work at UW is with the D4I building out the Tribal Data Repository (TDR). My goal is to establish a data governance framework and a platform that embraces Indigenous Data Sovereignty (IDSov). The TDR is a unique repository, as the owners of the server are not the data owners; Tribes have sovereignty over their data and the TDR is a medium to securely store data and conduct research. I have been given the opportunity to: • Design a unique data governance framework • Build a secure repository and data pipeline • Participate in research (often as a machine learning expert) • Teach • Manage multiple committees My prior job was Chief Data Officer at WI Legislative Audit Bureau (LAB). I built out data services, strategy, and framework. I built and improved pipelines for data retrieval, standardization, and quality, which pulled from a myriad of data sources. I used data to support improved decisions, research, and operations and established a culture that emphasizes secure and ethical data usage. My primary projects and responsibilities included: • Analysis and data transformation for reports and business domain analysis • Maintained LAB's data • Retrieved, joined, and standardized data from both state and federal data sources • Established policies for data access, usage, storage, and archival • Data visualization • Managed a team of data specialists, data managers, and analysts I have an extensive background working with data pipelines and machine learning. My previous position at VEDA allowed me the opportunity to wear many hats. I began as a junior data scientist and grew into a leadership position. I worked on many projects, including • Writing 'translators' to standardize hand-typed healthcare data • Identifying and remedying data quality issues (including geocoding locations, data semantics, mistyped/misspelled information) • Measurements of product performance • Helped design new products and tools for a data pipeline In addition to my responsibilities as a data scientist, I also ran and managed a team of data scientists while collaborating with other teams. Before VEDA, I completed a PhD in astronomy, with previous physics Master's and B.S. degrees. My PhD thesis focused on the time-domain analysis of radio emission sources in the HI survey, CHILES. I have previous research experience in polarized spectroscopy of supernovae and typing supernovae with their infrared emission. As I finished my PhD, I also worked part-time as a data scientist for STEALTHbits where my work focused on real-time detection of cyber attacks.
