Background
About Charlene Barnes
I am a passionate teacher, learner, and artist committed to equity, diversity, inclusion, and decolonization (EDID). For over twenty years, I have worked with diverse learners from ages 11 to 81, and in the subjects of Art, English, Drama, Social Studies, Science, French, and Learning Assistance. Within the classroom, I am experienced and highly adaptable. Since 2015, my praxis around EDID has guided my chosen professional development and higher learning commitments, extending into my Master of Education work through Thompson Rivers University. At TRU, the roles of Faculty of Arts Learning Strategist and Research Coordinator, Faculty of Education and Social Work, present new opportunities for EDID advocacy. My philosophy of education will shape my future education, teaching, professional development, and academic contributions. That life-long education is a dynamic, holistic, and humane exchange amongst all members of various learning communities, defines my philosophy. To enact this belief requires a critical theory lens, inspired by Freire and Greene, a pedagogy of care, inspired by Noddings and the First Peoples Principles of Learning (FPPL) as presented by the First Nations Education Steering Committee (FNESC). Within and beyond the classroom, I enjoy building bridges amongst diverse groups with common interests. Throughout my life, I have participated in learning communities ranging from family, friends, non-profit organizations, public education, artists, writers, theater companies, and online education. In these varied contexts, I am committed to practicing a critical, caring, and progressive pedagogy for humanity. As an artist, I have observed how my creativity has enhanced my teaching and volunteer efforts. Please explore the following LinkedIn links for descriptions and images of education-based art
