Background

About Charles E. James

I continue my involvement with The Gloucester Instititute, preserving a historic property and educational facility in Gloucester County, Virginia. This special place was known for many years as the Robert Russa Moton Conference Center. The historic property now serves as a place for recuperation and contemplative thought as well as the inspirational site for providing essential soft-skills training and mentoring for a new generation of leaders. What began as a single-family private retirement became a think-tank and resting place for Civil Rights leaders and Black entertainers during the 1950's-60's, which included the years of massive resistance to racial integration in Virginia. Like those before us, in 2006, my wife had a grand notion which became The Gloucester Institute. We began and continue the work of rehabilitation of buildings and infrastructure at the site to preserve the place for future leaders and people who see themselves as "solutionists". Contact us through our website, email or call for more information. Email: Assistant@gloucesterinstitute.org 804-356-4200 The Gloucester Institute 3201 Leadership Drive Gloucester, VA 23061 assistant@gloucesterinstitute.org The restorative work is focused on people, values, and historic buildings. We emphasize the values that sustained Blacks in post-enslavement America and identify and remediate gaps in significant soft skills for college-aged leaders. Rental of the facilities helps to support the rehabilitation and maintenance of the property as well as the costs of student recruitment, mentoring, and educational programs conducted here.
