In my doctoral work at the College of Education, my research focuses on academic textual identities, particularly those by writers of English as Additional Languages with Chinese as their first language. A textual identity, as I interpret it, is not only one claimed by the writer, but (perhaps, more importantly) the one interpreted by the reader of that text. Coming to this work from a socio-constructivist view of language and using the tools of systemic functional linguistics (SFL) and register analysis to explore these texts, my work also incorporates critical qualitative analyses of participant interviews exploring this social creation and interpretation of identity.
