About Charles Hamner

Began at the University of Virginia in1960 doing bench research in biochemistry; metabolic pathways as applied to reproductive biology; early work/ discoveries in mitochondrial function, Co-enzyme Q10, sperm metabolism, artificial insemination, in-vitro fertilization to 1968; continued in academic administration and moved into pharmaceutical( 60/40) research doing pre-clinical development with Merck, Upjohn, Cutter, Wm. H Merrell, Shering,AG, Hoffmann- LaRoche, WHO, Population Council, AH Robins. Helped develop 5 major pharmaceuticals: Reglan, Micro- K Extencaps, Mitrolan, and Biocox for the poultry industry, Heparin plus 15 OTC products- including Robitussin/Dimetapp,Lip quencher to 1978 when I was appointed Asst. VP for operations at UVA Med Center; carried out many academic roles at all levels including Chairman of Committee on Committees while continuing Ac/Pharma (80/20); Gave distinguished lectures worldwide, edited book ( Drug Development) on program project management which was featured at 1984 DIA Boston meeting. In 1988 was appointed President/CEO of the NC Biotechnology Center- Developed major academic biotech programs from middle school thru graduate school plus clinical technician and bioprocess manufacturing training centers at NCSU and NCCU and set up business development unit to train managers and finance biotech start-up companies( 32). Received N C State Achievement Award and Tech- Wire Lifetime achievement award; after my retirement in 2005 The CIIT in RTP was renamed The Hamner Institutes for Health Sciences; we increased support from 5 major chemical companies to 12 and added a pharmaceutical division of 18 pharmaceutical companies to study safety assessment of potential therapeutic compounds. I worker with THI for 10 years. Since 2015 I have been senior consultant/advisor to industry/universities mainly in the area of rare disease R&D. My strength is a very broad management experience in academics, industry and government with highest levels of responsibility, ability to get things done and knowing how to work with people from all walks of life.
