Background
About Charles MacLeod
Hi, I'm Charles Macleod, an Aerospace Engineering PhD student at the University of Bristol, UK, specializing in composites, aerospace technologies, and advanced manufacturing techniques. I have extensive experience carrying out mechanical testing campaigns, developing new image analysis methods for composite fiber detection and orientation measurement, and using MATLAB and ImageJ for data processing and analysis. In addition, I am highly skilled in the use of CATIA and GD & T standards and have frequently applied this knowledge to develop and manufacture my own Continuous Tow Shearing (CTS) and Automated Fiber Placement (AFP) prototype machines along with many other bespoke 3D printed devices. My PhD research has been focused on developing new design allowables test methods for the qualification of fiber-steered laminated aircraft structures, and I have expertise in ASTM testing standards and MIL-HDBK-17. During my Master's in Advanced Composites, I solved stiffness issues of top-of-the-line composite wheelchair racing wheels by developing a new design specific to the sport using Abaqus. As the former Composites Team Lead for the Formula Student Racing Team, I recruited a diverse group of engineering students to my team and taught them how to design composite molds and layup techniques. I have also grown the team's list of sponsors and donors by meeting with companies and community organizations. As a Graduate Teaching Assistant, I have educated PhD and MSc students on a wide range of composite manufacturing techniques and inspection methods. I have experience in disseminating my research at conferences, including taking 3rd place at the UK/Ireland SAMPE Student Seminar Competition. With my skills and experience in composites, aerospace technologies, and advanced manufacturing techniques, I am passionate about contributing to the aerospace industry and exploring new possibilities. I am excited about opportunities to work with like-minded professionals and to bring my expertise to the forefront of the industry.
