About Charles Marshik

On the leadership front: I naturally gravitate toward technical leadership positions, formal or informal, whether or not I consciously seek them out. On the personal level, I favor a leadership model called Situational Leadership from Dr Walt Natemeyer that guides you to an appropriate level of leadership & management based on task complexity and the team member's task readiness. On the macro level, I leverage my army experience that drives me to enable my people to accomplish the mission- NOT the other way around. I consider myself a perpetual student of leadership, with near continuous training throughout my time at NASA and in the military. I feel that leadership knowledge is something that needs to be refreshed regardless of experience. Just because you have a leadership position, it does not mean your leadership skill can't be improved. On the technical side: I generally prefer variety and breadth over deep subject matter expertise, and this is evident in my career timeline. Regardless of the technical specifics, there is a common thread in my successes, whether it's advising Afghan Security Forces or troubleshooting an aircraft power system or determining how to handle a deceased crew member on the moon: effective problem solving is an asset that always comes in to play. My stats: Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Electrical Engineering. 6 years of formal technical leadership at NASA. 5 years working project management and electrical engineering for operational aircraft. 22 years total working various capacities in human spaceflight, both as a contractor and a civil servant. 25 years of progressing military experience, from Private (E-1) to Major (O-4), with a combination of active duty mobilizations and reservist time.
