About Charles Shepherd

Charles has been investigating, renovating, restoring and preserving existing and historic buildings for over 30 years. He gained unique perspective and experience from working for over a decade with the Utah State Historic Preservation Office and from involvement in a wide range of private and public historic preservation projects. Charles also participated in the investigation, documentation and analysis of several very large historic buildings and complexes while working in Washington, DC. Since joining MJSA Architects in he has been the project or historical architect for a variety of historic building studies, renovations and restorations, from stabilization of a 510 sq. ft. historic water treatment control building associated with Fort Douglas (a National Historic Landmark) to directing major preservation components of the six-year seismic upgrade and restoration of the Utah State Capitol. Most of the referenced projects involved careful application of the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation and/or coordination with preservation commissions, etc. Where appropriate, application was also made for the federal or state historic preservation tax credits. A member of the Association for Preservation Technology International, Charles has given technical and historical presentations to both professional organizations and lay audiences. He has also served on committees and efforts to promote preservation of heritage resources.
