About Charley Dutil

A recent graduate of the University of Ottawa’s digital journalism program, I have spent the last two years as the editor-in-chief (EIC) of its student newspaper, the Fulcrum. As EIC, my duties included copyediting all articles and content, managing a staff of 16 students, and reporting on a list of controversies at the University of Ottawa. This led me to break national news when professor Verushka Lieutenant-Duval used a racial slur in a virtual classroom. The story was soon picked up by mainstream news outlets such as La Presse and the Globe and Mail, sparking a debate on academic freedom at the University of Ottawa. Prior to my years as the paper’s EIC, I was its sports editor. As sports editor, I worked on revamping the sports section to create a section aimed at varsity athletes and their families while keeping an investigative journalism angle. With that approach in mind, an article I wrote about the Gee-Gees reluctance to associate themselves with the Bell Let’s Talk campaign won a John H. McDonald award for excellence in sports reporting at the 2020 NASH conference. Aside from the Fulcrum, I have worked for the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) as a junior radio analyst. I also completed two internships, one as a journalist for a small Eastern Ontario radio station, and one for TFO's ONFR news division. Since my term ended at the Fulcrum, I have begun working on a number of freelance ideas while keeping my eyes open for my next opportunity in the industry.
