About Charlotta Thunborg

I am a dedicated PhD researcher and physiotherapist with clinical and theoretical knowledge in behavioral medicine and the promotion of healthy lifestyle changes. I am part of the Nordic Brain Network (NBN) under the esteemed leadership of Professor Miia Kivipelto. Our mission is to address the pressing issue of dementia prevention through a pioneering initiative funded by a generous FORTE grant of 24 million SEK. Our objective is to bridge the existing health disparities in this domain. Our research predominantly revolves around the dissemination and implementation of findings from the groundbreaking FINGER study, a comprehensive multimodal healthy lifestyle intervention designed to shield the brain against plaque formation and the onset of Alzheimer's disease (AD). With no definitive cure for AD currently available, our work seeks to go beyond symptom management and focus on prevention. Alarming statistics underscore the urgency: every third second, a person receives a diagnosis of AD, and the number of individuals affected is projected to triple by the year 2050. The FINGER study, a pioneering randomized controlled trial, stands as the most promising and unparalleled approach to date. Its impact is felt across more than 60 countries in the World-Wide-FINGER Network. At present, my primary research thrust centers on the effective implementation of FINGER study results in three key areas: 1) primary care, 2) memory clinics, and 3) the municipality of Lidingö, with a broader focus on engaging all interested municipalities in Sweden. We believe that the real impact of our research is not just in its discoveries, but in its practical application to improve the lives of individuals at risk of dementia. In addition to my research endeavors, I have a deep commitment to education and the dissemination of research findings to the wider public. I firmly believe in the imperative of making scientific knowledge accessible and comprehensible to all, as research is often funded by both corporations and government entities, which seek to maximize societal benefits from their investments. In essence, our mission is to empower individuals with the knowledge and guidance they need to enhance their lifestyle choices, thereby slowing down the progression of AD and other dementias. We are convinced that prevention is not just an option; it is the most effective intervention available. Our FORTE grant is a testament to our dedication to this crucial cause, as we strive to close the health gaps and transform the landscape of dementia prevention in Sweden and beyond.
