About Chauncey Parker

My life course led me to outdoor pursuits and I spent many years as a mountaineering guide and instructor. This led naturally to me being involved for many years with mountain rescue. Through these experiences, I found that I was effective working with people in distress. As the years passed it became clear that a career in mental health was a good fit for my interest in challenging work and being a service to others. I also am a pragmatist; I want things that are effective. I want to make a difference. I was fortunate to be led to outstanding training and mentors and I have become an expert in a set of complimentary therapies that are, on the one hand quite technically oriented – humans are complex creatures; and on the other hand, are based on a compassionate and non-judging approach. If I expect my clients to have patience and compassion for themselves, it only makes sense that I demonstrate that and strive to treat them in that manner. I completed my bachelor’s degree in 1994 at the University of Nevada, Reno and my main mentors were Steve Hayes (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, ACT) and William Follette (Functional Analytic Psychotherapy, FAP). My doctoral degree was completed in 2006 at the University of Washington in Seattle under the tutelage of Dr. Robert “Bob” Kohlenberg and Dr. Mavis Tsai, the founders of Functional Analytic Psychotherapy and the Global ACL Project.
