About Chayan Chatterjee

I am an astrophysicist working on gravitational wave astronomy, and recipient of the A.I. for New Messengers Postdoctoral Fellowship, jointly offered by the Department of Physics and Astronomy, and the Data Science Institute at Vanderbilt University, USA. My research focuses on investigating the properties of massive black hole binaries using gravitational wave data and developing data analysis tools for multi-messenger astronomy using machine learning. I am a member of the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA Collaboration, a scientific organization comprising international physics institutes and research groups dedicated to the search for gravitational waves. Additionally, I am an affiliate of OzGrav, the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Gravitational Wave Discovery. I completed my PhD in Physics from The University of Western Australia in 2023. During my PhD, I developed machine learning models enabling rapid discovery and inference of the properties of gravitational wave sources from data recorded by the LIGO and Virgo interferometers. Originally from West Bengal, India, I obtained my undergraduate and Masters degrees in Physics from Presidency University, Kolkata. During my Masters, I did research on self-interacting dark matter and the role they play on the formation of large-scale structures in the universe. Passionate about science communication and public outreach, I have delivered public talks and participated in science talk shows and podcasts. Apart from astronomy and physics, my interests include reading, creative writing, films, and traveling.
