About Cherry Short
Dr Cherry Short CBE is currently Senior Fellow at New York University (NYU) for global strategy in the Silver School of Social Work and the Wagner School of Public Service. Prior to this role, Dr Cherry Short CBE was the Associate Dean of Global and Community Initiatives Suzanne -Peck School of Social Work in Los Angeles, California, as well as a visiting scholar of the business school at the Metropolitan University of Wales, Cardiff. Before taking on her role in research and academia, Dr Short was an appointed under Tony Blair’s administration in the U.K. for over 10 years. She was also an elected politician in Wales Institute, she served as a U.K. Race Equality and Human Rights Commissioner as well as the Race Equality Commissioner for Wales, in which she oversaw all race relations in Wales, including the Race Relation Laws for the National Assembly of Wales. As commissioner, she worked to use the commission’s legal powers to improve access to justice and promote social equality. She received the esteemed CBE award (Commander of the British Empire), one of the UK’s highest public service awards given by Queen Elizabeth II, for her extensive work in race relations and human rights. Dr Short is an experienced advocate for social justice, and a qualified forensic social worker focusing on global approaches to social injustices. Her work has contributed to major social policy changes in local and central governments. She is a highly sought after keynote speaker. In addition to her work at the university, Dr Short is a member of the International Social Services executive board in Geneve that deals with the migration of children and their families separated at various different borders. This organisation has a presence in 137 countries. She was recently been made an International Goodwill Ambassador to this organisation.
