Background
About Chiara Leo
From aspiring equine vet to oncology expert, my career path took an unexpected but fascinating turn. Inspired by a cytology course, I delved into the world of cells and oncology, leading me on an international journey of discovery and growth. I embarked on my oncology adventure with an internship at Tierspital University of Zurich, followed by an ACVIM residency in Oncology in Switzerland, inclusive of externships at Washington State University, USA. From 2011 to 2016, I was a Lecturer in Oncology at the Royal Veterinary College (London, UK) and pointed “ad interim” Head of the Oncology service from 2015 to 2016, but, more importantly, I have become the proud owner of Arturo, a gentleman dog rescued from a London kennel, who has been with me ever since. I have obtained the Postgraduate Certificate in Veterinary Education, which significantly improved my skills and knowledge in all areas of communication, teaching, and assessment. After almost ten years abroad, answering the call of my roots, I returned to Italy in 2016 to lead the Oncology service at AniCura Istituto Veterinario Novara and serve as the scientific director at UNISVET, creating groundbreaking oncology services and educational programs. My passion for education extends to co-directing the first International Veterinary Oncology Master with the University of Padua, and actively shaping post-graduate educational events. Recently elected as the secretary of ESVONC (European Society of Veterinary Oncology), I'm committed to advancing the field globally. In my latest venture, I've joined AniCura as the Residency Program Manager. Here, I am responsible for mapping specialists and future specialists within the group, fostering a nurturing environment for their growth. Focused on young, highly specialised vets, my role involves addressing their educational needs and strategising their development within the company. This position allows me to blend my passion for veterinary medicine with a commitment to shaping the future of veterinary specialists.
