About Chiara Romano

I am a professional with more than ten years of working experience in the development sector, with a specialization in in the area of social development, targeting, gender, poverty, food security and nutrition, particularly on social sustainability by working with international organisations and collaborating with universities and research centres. I hold a PhD in development anthropology and have conducted extensive field research on land tenure systems, livelihoods and pastoralism in Arid and Semi Arid areas. I lived and worked in four different countries across four continents. My work experience spans from social development, targeting, gender, youth and social inclusion, including developing ad hoc knowledge for integration of thematic cross-cutting themes such as: climate, youth mainstreaming and nutrition as well as youth entrepreneurship. I have substantial field experience in Africa (8 years), Asia (4 years) as well as Middle East and East and Central Europe. I am currently working as an independent consultant, mainly for IFAD, as well as for WB, FAO Investments Center and UNIDO. In this capacity, I have been engaged in different missions: design, supervision and implementation support, monitoring, completion missions. I have assisted agencies to better address social related issues, specifically on gender and youth inclusion in the projects and programmes that they support. This includes integration of the above in programmes covering various areas: i.e. irrigation, rural finance, market and infrastructure development, natural resource managements, value chain, draught resilience and climate change. As consultant I have worked in Angola, Egypt, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Mozambique, Kenya, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Seychelles, Turkey, Palestine, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Jordan. I have also supported operations in Syria and Yemen from remote. As part of my academic work I have conducted anthropological field research, including qualitative and quantitative surveys and analysis, in India, Mexico and Ethiopia.
