About Chiara Torresan

My main research fields are forest resources monitoring and management, and geomatics for natural resources assessment. Since many years, I have worked as researcher in remote sensing field applied to forest management and planning. Specifically, my experience come from research activities focus in examining the predictive abilities, efficiency, and suitability of methods for mapping forest inventory attributes using LiDAR (airborne, UAV-borne and terrestrial), other remote sensing, and ground data. My efforts are put in coupling remote sensed data as auxiliary information with sample inventory data to improve the precision of volume and biomass inventory estimates at different scales. My experience is also in using LiDAR-derived metrics to discriminate different types of forest structure applying different statistical techniques (from supervised classification technique to learning machines techniques). In the last period, my research was focused in European mountain forest and specifically to understand the importance of species size dominance and heterogeneity on productivity of spruce-fir-beech mountain forest stands in Europe. I am also studying to maintain and improve the efficiency of the beech forest ecosystems in the Apennines, through adaptive to climate change forest management. During all research activities, I am involved in the definition of protocol for the surveys, in the data collection using Geomatics equipment and traditional instruments. I’m member of the core-group of the Community of Practice on Forest Management Decision Support Systems. I’m now participating at the COST Actions CLIMO CA15226. She participated at the COST Actions FORSYS FP 0804, and OPTIMISE ES1309.
