Background
About Chloe Atkins
Lecturer in Policing, Criminology and Law, I am passionate about empowering students to learn in a supportive, creative and inspiring environment. I have a First Class (with Honours) Degree in Criminology with Police Studies, a Masters Degree with Merit & I am in my third year of my PhD. Over the last three years I have developed a particular interest in Family Law, Police responses to Domestic Violence, the impact of abuse on women in prison, and the continuation of controlling & coercive behaviour within the court setting. I have a strong interest in Policing, having studied specialist areas in Community Policing, Evidence-based Policing, Murder and Professional & Organised Crime. My academic interests extend to the UK prison system having spent time working in Women’s Prisons over the last five years. My interests expand to risk and harm within public safety, and understanding power and fear from an intersectional approach. My PhD in Criminology is an investigation into the role, place and value of the independent domestic violence advocate in assisting victims of domestic violence to obtain protective orders under private law when they are litigants in person. My academic commitment has attracted two University Progression Scholarship Awards over the past four years and I have been chosen as an Annual Award winner by the SLSA (Socio Legal Studies Association) for my PhD academic research poster work, two consecutive years running. In addition to my academic career, I am passionate about supporting victims, survivors and their children to live safe lives, free from violence. I am a qualified, accredited IDVA with a background in leading the Domestic Violence response within the North Yorkshire Police Commissioned service for York and North Yorkshire HUB, as well as Family Courts & Prevention. I have experience working within the Magistrate and Crown courts, attending plea hearings and sentencing, as well as to support victims subjected to private family law proceedings within Family Courts. I have worked with multi-agencies including North Yorkshire Police, Probation, CPS, Health Services, Social Care, and CAFCASS. I have trained numerous professionals on the subject of domestic violence, including Magistrates, court personnel, solicitors, social workers and CAFCASS. I currently volunteer as the UK Lead for an international project ‘Brave Spaces’ which aims to empower survivors and end violence against women and children through empowerment camps, workshops, education and resources, founded on a trip to South Africa with my students.
