Background

About Chris Barfield

Chris Barfield, MHIT, RN, CPPS, is a Patient Safety Advisor and Consultant for ECRI and the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) Patient Safety Organization (PSO). He is a currently practicing registered nurse (RN) with experience in both acute care and aging services as well as in the developmental disabilities sector. At ECRI, in addition to supporting PSO members, he serves as the co-lead for the PSO Data Functional Team, and has been a major contributor to the development and execution of Total Systems Safety (TSS), ECRI’s innovative and holistic approach to reliably and measurably reduce preventable harm. Prior to joining ECRI in 2022, he worked in patient safety and performance improvement for a large health system in northwest Ohio. As a lifelong learner, he has developed a diverse background while remaining constant in his drive for continuous improvement. Chris holds a Bachelor of Arts in Public Health degree and a Master of Health Information Technology degree, both from the University of South Carolina. He is Just Culture Master Certified, a Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS), holds a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt, and has extensive experience in healthcare data analytics, process improvement, and project and change management. His professional goal is to provide insight and tools that assist and inspire individuals to drive change at their organizations to ultimately make lasting, positive impacts on their patient populations. When not striving to inspire at work, you will likely find him staying active (either by choice or from chasing three lively kiddos), and occasionally (or frequently) making and enjoying various coffee drinks for himself and others.
