About Chris Burney

An engineering administrator with experience in the planning, design, construction, and operation of facilities in 3 countries. Since the fall of 2015 I have been working in local government with increasing levels of responsibilities ranging from managing a $50 million school renovation, to managing all school facilities to assuming the leadership of the Public Works Department. For over 25 years I headed Facility Management Departments within acute care hospitals ranging from 300 beds to 800 beds in both independent hospitals and hospital systems. I have managed departments of over 100 employees, both in the union and non union sector, and I have had responsibilities for the planning, design and construction of almost $1 billion of healthcare related facilities, as well as operations for all types of physical plant, not only in hospitals but also in buildings ranging from research facilities to educational buildings, and from medical office buildings to 1,200 space parking garages. As a 15 year member of the Revision Committee for The FGI "Guidelines for the Design and Construction of Hospitals and Outpatient Facilities"​ on the 2001, 2006, 2010, and 2014 editions, I helped to create and modify the nationally accepted design standards for healthcare institutions. I have served at the national level on committees for BOCA, the American Institute of Plant Engineers (now AFE), the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers, the Illuminating Engineering Society, and the American Society for Healthcare Engineering In the late 80s I was a member of a National Institute of Building Sciences task force that produced the first Model Specifications for the "Abatement of Asbestos Containing Material". I have presented technical papers regionally and nationally and I am an award winning published writer. For 4 years I served as the president of the Connecticut Hospital Engineers Society and I was a long term member of the New England Healthcare Engineering Society board of directors.
