About Chris Carey

Shortly after graduating from university, and with the memories still fresh from my study abroad experience just one year prior, I sought an opportunity continue my self-discovery through living abroad. Through my study abroad experience in Santiago, Chile, I discovered an inherent ability to adapt to any cultural setting. I arrived in Chile modestly proficient in Spanish and left the country fluent. I returned to California open-minded, refreshed, and culturally and intellectually enlightened. It was not until I returned home that I was able to identify the stark differences between the daily adventures of living abroad and the daily grind of living at home. While abroad, every day is a new adventure, from navigating through local public transport, local slang or dialect, and local cuisine to the pleasures of interacting with the local geography and population, in its art, leisure, politic and sport. I found that while abroad, I naturally reverted back to my childhood, when everyday brought a new discovery and a deeper understanding and appreciation for my surroundings. I wholeheartedly believe that is how life should be lived; with an endless imagination and boundless creativity, fostered by an infinite curiosity for one’s surroundings. Life lived through the thoughtful, inquisitive perspective of a child. I am deeply grateful to have had the opportunity to work with students and foster their curiosity and determination to learn a language foreign to their native tongue; being a helpful guide on their path toward global and cultural awareness. I am again as anxious and excited as a child as I approach the closing of one chapter and embark on the beginning of another, full of adventure, enlightenment and discovery.
