Background
About Chris Damkat
You could call me a generalist. My interests lie in technology and science, their recent development, their influence on human life, their application. I have a strong affinity with ‘images’ in general, I am imaginative. In my professional life I have worked on Image Processing, Computer Vision, 3D Visualization, VR, and most recently Manufacturing Simulation and Generative AI. Next to that, in my personal life I am an amateur photographer, I like to draw and paint. I always try to see the ‘big picture’ of things. I like to collect and structure knowledge and share my insights. I like to get to the bottom of problems and represent them in a way such that they can be understood by everyone. Currently I am working as a Scientist at Signify (former Philips Lighting) Research on the digitalization of mainly internal processes. For example, the creation of Discrete Event Simulation model of one of our manufacturing sites to evaluate the material flow and the introduction of detailed production scheduling. Or the creation of a chatbot to improve productivity and quality by providing easy access to critical engineering documents, and further improvements and applications by using agentic frameworks and hybrid retrieval. In the past I have worked 3D visualization projects such as the creation of an automated rendering pipeline rendering many combinations of lighting products with lighting effect in different rooms resulting in layers which could blended in real-time for our consumer sales tool Home Lighting Designer. This included the creation and management of the asset creation pipeline for the products. When mobile, cheap VR became possible we applied the same real-time blending to prerendered stereoscopic 360 images providing a very high-quality experience with on very limited hardware. Early in my career I worked on video and image processing for TV focussing on picture quality, such as noise reduction, super-resolution, motion compensation and video compression. More recently I have investigated the maturity of computer vision solutions to monitor manual assembly operations. As I have gained quite some technical experience, with different but related technologies (image processing, 3D visualization, simulation, AI), I would like to share this experience to help companies digitalize, to think strategically about digitalization, from business/end-user value perspective while deeply understanding the capabilities and limitations of these technologies. ‘StrengthsFinder 2.0’-strengths: Adaptability, Ideation, Individualization, Responsibility, Strategic
