Background
About Chris Heysel
Mr. Chris J. Heysel is currently the Director of Nuclear Operations and Facilities at McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, where he is responsible for all university nuclear facilities. These include the McMaster Nuclear Reactor, a 5 MW research and isotope-production reactor, as well as the 3 accelerators and a cyclotron isotope production and research facility. These facilities constitute the utilization and processing facilities—a multi-million dollar isotope production business—by which McMaster produces, processes, and separates bulk radio-isotopes, which are sold to major pharmaceutical and industrial users. Mr. Heysel also provides consulting services to Canadian and International clients on isotope production and sales, licensing and regulatory affairs, safety analysis, utilization facility design, and nuclear operations and maintenance. Mr. Heysel possesses extensive expertise in isotope-production reactors. He previously served in several senior roles at Chalk River, Ontario, Canada’s test and isotope production reactor. His duties included serving on the management team, which oversaw the safe and efficient operation of the 135 MW research reactor that supplied isotopes used in over seven million medical treatments per annum. He was the operations management point-of-contact for all reactor experimental and commercial programs and had overall responsibility of all reactor-fueling, andisotope production. Mr. Heysel had a variety of other operational responsibilities that provide him with a detailed understanding of isotope production, including reactor control and safety systems, electrical distribution systems, building normal and emergency standby electrical power, reactor safety system surveillance and testing program, emergency preparedness, and training.
