About Chris Keller

For the last 14 or so years of his journalism career, Chris has blended journalism, data analysis, Python and JavaScript to help an audience understand their world. He does this by working to understand complex information and convey it in an easy-to-understand way. If you'll permit the metaphor, he tries to understand the entire iceberg so the audience doesn't. Chris Keller joined The Associated Press in 2023 as a Data and Graphics Journalist working for its award-winning data journalism team. His particular focus is building datasets that can help provide big-picture context in breaking news situations and contribute to the overall goal of making sense of the news for the AP’s global audience. In addition, he pursues data-driven storytelling and automated reporting projects in collaboration with reporters and editors across the country and around the globe. Previously, Chris worked as the managing editor of Albuquerque Business First, where he helped the staff prioritize daily and long-term projects and coached the reporting team on everything from interviewing techniques to surfacing information through data and public records to improving their narrative writing. Chris has worked in various newsroom roles since 2002, including as a graphics journalist with the Los Angeles Times’ 2020 election team and at KPCC where his work on officer-involved shootings and California wildfires earned multiple awards. Chris grew up near Madison, Wis, and studied communications and journalism at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. He is currently studying interpersonal communication at the University of New Mexico.
