About Chris Lam

I am a dedicated, loyal and passionate worker that is constantly learning more to ensure my counselling services are dynamic, fluid and attentive to client needs. In my work, I always strive to provide good quality human services to clients. Currently, I am the owner of Ride the Waves Counselling Service. I offer in-person and teletherapy to adults, youth and families. My area of specialty is assisting people with better understanding emotions, gaining more awareness of their own emotions and helping people to find more effective ways of managing with their emotions. Previous to this position, I was working with youth involved with the justice system. This work involved getting clients to 'buy-in' to the process of counselling, building relationships and utilizing the therapeutic relationship to encourage a safe and thorough exploration of their lives, choices and future hopes. In addition to individual counselling, I was the coordinator of the program which included outreach of the program, managing day-to-day operations, tracking program statistical data, measuring outcomes and creating programs to supplement the work of individual therapy. I have worked in the social service sector for approximately 18 years and my skills as an individual counsellor have been enhanced through my prior working experiences in the social service sector. Areas include working with children in a hospital setting and children diagnosed with cancer (aged 2-18); Working 1-1 with children with autism (aged 2-6) doing Intenstive Behavioural Interventions (IBI); research with the Ontario government; working as a Social Work placement student in a critical care unit in a hospital setting, child welfare setting & children's mental health centre; and worked as a Housing Counsellor in the Flemingdon Park neighbourhood.
