About Chris Layton

Professor Christopher Layton is a prominent Queensland based Clinical Ophthalmologist and a national leader in innovative ophthalmology, with expertise in macular disease, cataract surgery and early treatment of glaucoma. He completed medicine at the University of Queensland, ophthalmology training in Queensland, Oxford and London, subspecialty training in retinal disease at the Royal Brisbane Hospital and holds a PhD in diabetic retinopathy from Oxford University. Professor Layton is a Rhodes Scholar and founder of the Layton Vision Foundation, which prior to border closures, provided thousands of vision saving clinical services to the people of the Pacific Islands. He is the clinical director of the Foundation's Research Centre, directs Queensland's largest ophthalmologist led research team, and is the founder of Ocugene, a biotechnology start-up which is commercialising his ocular gene therapy technology with use applications in macular degeneration, uveitis and melanoma. Professor Layton is the listed inventor of patents currently under assessment in the USA, the EU, Japan, Israel, Australia and Singapore. He has published extensively in the international literature and his work has been recognised by multiple awards at international meetings.
