I have been using SketchUp since around 2009 where I discovered it while I was selling custom sheds and kit homes. Around 2011 I started as a design consultant for the Weeks Building Group, selling and designing custom homes then attended TAFE SA in 2012 to study the Diploma of Building Design to obtain more knowledge and skills in the building industry. At the beginning of 2013 I started at Creative Outdoors as a concept modeller using SketchUp as a sales and design tool. Early on I noticed a regular occurrence of rework and difficulties onsite with parts missing and installers unclear on custom aspects of the project which caused downtime and profit erosion. I started to use SketchUp to build accurate models of the site conditions and framing designs which could be used to create a bill of materials and working drawings while also using it to show the clients their project in a way that they have never seen before which took away any surprises in the design decisions and material choices. Over the years I developed a very specific workflow in creating what I now call 'Virtual Building Environments' using Trimble SketchUp & Layout from early concepts to council documentation all the way through to construction documents and material take offs which allowed Creative Outdoors to confidently take on the most complex projects and win more jobs with the immersive 3D visuals. It became a corner stone to the way they operated and permeated every aspect of their business. While working there I took on a few projects such as digital prototyping for Little Letter Lights Co and a few Pre visualisation jobs creating photo real rendered images of commercial properties for marketing. Towards the end of 2016 I started my own design & drafting company so I could take on a variety of projects and to show other building companies how they can utilise SketchUp in their workflow to win more projects and design more efficiently in 3D
