About Chris Topping

I qualified as a solicitor in 1988 and worked at Jackson and Canter (now part of the MAPD Group) for my whole career. I was the head of the actions against police team in the Civil Liberties Department at Broudie Jackson Canter. I was a partner and owner in the business until March 2020 and have long experience in managing a business through both good times and hard! On 1st March 2024 I became a consultant to the firm, reducing my hours! I am very proud to be a trustee at Vauxhall Law Centre which provides quality legal advice to those who in most need. I chair the Steering Committee of the Liverpool Access to Advice Network which promotes coordination amongst advice providers across the Liverpool City region. I was President of Liverpool Law Society 2018- 2019 and was partly responsible for opening up the membership of the society to non-solicitors. I am passionate about access to justice and the need to make the law accessible and affordable for all. Specialties: I am one of the leading solicitors in actions against the police in the country and appear in Chambers Directory which describes me as "brilliant in terms of police actions." and "he really does have a lot of fight for his clients." I represented over 200 clients who were damaged by the cover up by South Yorkshire Police following Hillsborough. The highlight of my career to date was the case of Mr and Mrs Keegan in the European Court of Human Rights which changed the way in which Police forces have to behave when obtaining a warrant. This case shows just how important the Human Rights Act is and why we must not allow it to be repealed.
