About Christian Caton

I am someone who is passionate about diving into complex data to find solutions to important questions. I have 5 years of experience in working with data throughout my Master’s and PhD studies at Warwick University. Since then, I have conducted 3 months of academy training at Digital futures which has given me opportunity to advance on my existing skills and learn new skills; giving me realistic expectations of how to handle data and apply my skills professionally. I was awarded a full EPSRC Scholarship for an integrated four-year doctoral training programme which I conducted academic research in Computer Science at the University of Warwick. During my research in Urban Science and Progress I examined city-faced challenges in Urban Planning using the London Plan as a case study. To help solve these challenges, I evaluated public consultation data via Neural Language Models and NLP Topic Modelling and determined the role they play by highlighting issues of interest in the data from various stakeholders. Throughout my research and the academy, projects ranged from data analytics and visualisation using Tableau, to building supervised and unsupervised learning algorithms in Python. I have developed many skills in Python, SQL and Visualisation, whilst taking part in team data-dive challenges working alongside data analysts from New York University and The London Ambulance Service, using their data to better understand patterns of incidents and resource allocation. I have published and presented a paper summarising the research I have conducted (Evaluating Public Consultation in Urban Planning via Neural Language Models and Topic Modelling) to PLATIAL’21: International Symposium on Platial Information Science. Publication Date: 08/12/2021 Currently, I am working as a Data Engineer for a Global Bank, where I am responsible for designing, building, and maintaining data pipelines and infrastructure to support the data needs of the organisation. This opportunity has given me experience in cloud-based data platforms like Google Cloud Platform and proficiency in BigQuery. Harnessing the power of Apache Spark, my role involves optimising performance and scalability; leveraging Python and Scala to craft efficient and maintainable codebases for different stakeholder assets, whilst developing creative solutions to handle complex code transformations and adapt them to older and future processes.
