About Christopher Brett

Throughout my career I have written and developed code to facilitate the acquisition of, and to improve the processing and presentation of geospatial data. In doing so, I have found a passion for programming, data analysis and big data and seek to continually expand my knowledge and capabilities. Initially, as a surveyor for Van Oord, I would be tasked with mobilising and operating bathymetric survey platforms to monitor the progress of dredging and marine construction projects around the world. Subsequently with HR Wallingford, I was able to study the theory behind my field experience writing software and algorithms for bespoke projects and undertaking data analysis of big data for experimental purposes. Representing HR Wallingford, I was able to present the results of one such research project at the WODCON conference - a highlight of my career as a Scientist. Learning new techniques and approaches was been crucial to me during my time as a scientist with HR Wallingford and I benefited from working with more experienced developers and Scrum masters who were able to impart their knowledge and management skills; as a result, I can see that working as part of a competent driven team is essential for the effective delivery of almost any project. Most recently, working as a developer for UTX I have had the opportunity to refine my development skills in a unique and challenging technological field. When creating innovative solutions, I particularly appreciate how well written code can make an algorithm simple to understand whilst providing powerful results. As such, I enjoy the challenge of benchmarking, testing and improving the efficiency of the algorithms; both in terms of memory/processing time and their robustness.
