My doctoral work in the laboratory Dr. James R. Lupski has been to further our understanding of copy number variation and the mechanism underlying complex chromosomal rearrangements (CCRs). The rapid advancement of high-resolution genomic sequencing and entirely new technologies has created an extremely exciting time to be a human genetics graduate student. Pioneering new techniques such as Bionano optical mapping and PacBio/Nanopore long-read sequencing I continue to investigate and characterize the architecture and mechanisms mediating structural variants in a variety of disease states.
