Background
About Christopher Halsted
I am a geoscientist and educator with nearly a decade of experience leading research projects, making sense of complex quantitative data, and communicating technical concepts. I have specialized skills in Earth surface processes and hazards, climate data analysis and interpretation, and science communication. I am currently seeking a new career as my family plans a move across the country, and I would bring this robust skillset to potential employers- Experience designing, leading, and managing projects focused on both Earth surface processes and climate change impacts as evidenced by seven peer-reviewed publications in top journals in these fields. The success of these projects entailed funding acquisition from research grants and fellowships, collaboration with interdisciplinary peers, data collection, analysis, and interpretation, mentoring of junior researchers, and writing of results for publications- Skilled science communicator having developed and delivered college courses at Williams College, the University of Vermont, and Champlain College, and presented research at over a dozen professional conferences and invited seminars. To increase student engagement I incorporate active learning exercises into courses, including applied investigations of local landslides, GIS-based mapping of post-fire debris flows, and analyses of climate projection outputs to plan adaptation strategies- Advanced quantitative analysis and interpretation skills with proficiencies in Python, Matlab, and geospatial software including ArcGIS Pro and QGIS. I have taken multiple graduate courses in advanced statistical analyses for scientific research and applied this knowledge in my published research. As both a researcher and educator, my focus over the past decade has been on understanding and communicating the impacts of climate change, particularly as it applies to natural hazards. I am proud of the work I have done, but I am excited to transition into a role working more directly on climate and hazard solutions. I believe that my background and skillset would be an asset to organizations focused on climate and geohazard risk analysis, adaptation planning, and mitigation strategies.
