About Christopher Heckman

I am currently a Postdoctoral Researcher at Wake Forest University, seeking to transition into a professional role where I can apply my expertise in computer modeling and data analytics to real-world challenges. I’m particularly interested in opportunities related to risk management, water resources, conservation, or outdoor recreation. Colleagues describe me as persistent, patient, and empathetic—traits that shape how I approach problem-solving, teamwork, and long-term projects. I am certainly an expert in my field, but I don’t have to be the expert in the room. I genuinely value being part of a team, contributing to collaborative efforts, and doing what’s best for the group or project. Highlights from my work: • I have a Master’s in Environmental Science and Management and a PhD focused on modeling climate–vegetation interactions. • I have broad experience running environmental models, analyzing large datasets, and communicating results through clear, compelling stories, which lead to several publications and numerous conference presentations. • I am a creative problem solver—during my PhD, I developed a theory that distilled a complex relationship into its core components, offering an intuitive framework that challenged foundational assumptions in ecohydrology. My work has focused on using models to understand how vegetation responds to climate variability—both historical and future—and on quantifying the uncertainty surrounding those responses. Ultimately, the goal of modeling isn’t just to run models, but to use data and evidence to craft narratives that help people make sense of complex environmental systems. To complete this work, I rely on a skillset that includes: • Downloading, cleaning, and preparing large datasets, including gap-filling and spatial interpolation • Running, debugging, and calibrating models written in Fortran, C, and Python • Analyzing datasets and model output across space, time, and uncertainty using R and MATLAB, applying a range of statistical techniques • Integrating literature, data, and modeling results to communicate complex findings clearly, both in writing and presentations, to a range of audiences Email: heckman@wfu.edu
