Background
About Christopher Ketko
What is success? As Co-Founder & CEO of Pardon Applications of Canada (PAC), my leadership and perseverance have been pivotal in improving the lives of a neglected market: the 5+ Million Canadians and residents living with the stigma of a publicly visible criminal record. In its 15+ years, PAC has delivered impactful results by enhancing employability, expanding travel freedom, supporting adoption, enabling home ownership, and restoring peace of mind. Some clients have even accessed life-saving U.S. medical treatment, made possible by a successful U.S. Waiver application - one of our core services. In 2011, the Pardon & Waiver industry was fragmented and lacked credibility. The largest players took service integrity and transparency for granted, opening the door for a new approach. In just 5 years, PAC became the first in the industry to earn A+ Accreditation - despite a 30+ year head start by competitors. Today, PAC holds offices in 14 cities across Canada, with an industry-best 4.65/5 customer rating. We raised the standards, forcing competitors to follow suit just to capture the same or worse market share they once held uncontested. My personal journey has been anything but typical. Traumatic events as a child instilled a fierce independence that still lives in me today. As a teen, I would often be found hiding in storage room lockers, or sleeping in building hallways, then 24 hours later, competing against adults across North America as one of Canada’s top junior chess players. I loved chess, in part because it felt safe. Only I controlled my pieces. But it was building a business - not chess or academia - that inspired me. At 17, I launched "Chess for Kids" in the KW region. Over the next decade, the initiative became so embedded in the community that the City of Waterloo declared chess a "minor sport"- the first time a non-athletic activity had been so anointed. Later, I bought and sold a restaurant, restructured a commercial laundry business, and played competitive poker. In 2010, I moved to Toronto seeking a new challenge, and soon after, PAC was born. Funny how your mindset evolves. I used to think “success” would be waiting for me like a winner's trophy - a glistening entitlement earned through sacrifice. But now I understand that money, affirmation, acclaim, validation. these are shallow pursuits. Whether as a scared young boy, employer, or entrepreneur, my success has been achieved within the journey of those battles. The victories, yes - but especially the defeats. And that is what defines me as successful today.
