About Christopher Tulk

I like remote work! In the middle of a global pandemic, my family and I moved across the country to live in Newfoundland while I continue to work (extremely) remotely back in Ottawa. While I've never been an astronaut, a stunt driver, or a deep-sea diver, I've certainly done a lot of neat and interesting things in 25+ years of employment. An undergraduate degree in physics led to a job as a chemical engineer in semi-conductor manufacturing. That job led to a 5-year labour of love as the owner/operator of a small business retailing comic books.(Yes, the kid in me got to sell, read and talk about comic books all day as a job!) The arrival of twin girls ultimately led me away from that and into a job that I enjoy immensely (but actually pays the bills), primarily as a Linux network administrator at the Radiation Protection Bureau (RPB) of Health Canada. I also maintain and repair (as well as review and analyze the data from) a network of environmental radiation monitors from coast to coast. The Covid19 global pandemic presented an opportunity to work remotely (from Newfoundland) for Health Canada in Ottawa. I now split my time between two groups at RPB: the Radiation Surveillance Division (RSD) where I continue my Linux network administrator duties, and the Nuclear Emergency Preparedness and Response Division (NEPRD) which models and plans for Health Canada's response to potential nuclear emergencies. Along the way I have- swept floors in an airplane hangar - worked the overnight shift at a medical test equipment manufacturing facility - built, programmed and tested telephone switches - built websites - owned a tractor - raced into evacuated buildings (wearing appropriate protective equipment and with lots of training)- put out fires (both literally and figuratively)- mapped background radiation levels in exotic locations such as Helsinki Finland, Vancouver British Columbia and the eastern suburbs of Ottawa Ontario - been a part of the larger security efforts of the Vancouver Olympics and the Toronto G8/G20 Summit in 2010, as well as the Charlevoix G7 summit in 2018 I'm adaptable. I roll with whatever life offers. I welcome new challenges. I've learned a lot on my way here and look forward to learning even more.
