As the U.S. begins to gear up for a cashless world, already a way of life in Sweden, and for myriad other disruptive technologies that were not that long ago merely theoretical musings at a dinner party, the banking industry will once again be front and center in this transformation. Most millennials will have only the vaguest recollection of once being toted in their parents’ baby backpacks, bouncing up and down to the bank before closing hours in a mad dash to cash a bi-weekly paycheck or to fill out the paperwork for a mortgage. Now, they don’t think twice of going online to buy groceries, go to the movies, pay the rent, or pay back their brother or sister for the money they borrowed last week. As a system programmer for Tompkins Trust Company when I first joined the company, my job was to determine how to establish a network of ATMs to end this bi-weekly sprint. Working with the VP of the Programming Department, my first task at that job was writing financial system code. As it turned out, both of my degrees - computer science and mechanical engineering – were going to prove invaluable and also put to the test because the issues naturally straddled both hardware and software domains. Making the channelized communication system work was obviously the largest task at hand but in the end, its beauty (along with the multiple sophisticated telecommunications programs we added over the years) was that a banking system in a small Upstate, NY city comprised of 16-17 branches now boasts 89 branches in New York and Pennsylvania with a new $39M Corporate Headquarters slated to be finished in Q2 2018. It is what’s up next that fascinates me and always has. And that is why moving forward, I would like to bring my vast experience and critical thinking to an enterprise technology team in either a consultancy/project management capacity.
