Background
About Claire Ewing
I am currently a Senior Climate Action Specialist with the City of Richmond's Climate and Environment department. I lead the development of policies, programs, and strategies to implement actions in the City's 2050 Community Energy and Emissions Plan, particularly those focused on existing buildings. I design and facilitate community engagement processes, data tools, and other projects to promote zero-emission, equitable, and resilient communities. In 2021, I graduated with my Master of Science in Resources, Environment, and Sustainability from the University of British Columbia. My Master's research thesis, Environmental Justice and the Enforcement of Air Pollution Laws in Canada, examined how different governments enforce air pollution laws and administer various enforcement tools to offenders, and how different communities experience enforcement. In 2019, I graduated Magna Cum Laude from Wake Forest University with a Bachelor of Arts in Politics and International Affairs and minors in Biology and Environmental Studies. My career path is oriented towards environmental policy, governance, sustainability, and ecological health. Within this lens, I have undertaken various sustainability-oriented endeavors, including my current position as a Senior Climate Action Specialist with the City of Richmond and previous roles including: Senior Policy and Planning Analyst and Sustainability Scholar with Metro Vancouver, Researcher at UBC, and Sustainability Projects Coordinator at the Alma Mater Society of UBC. My interests and skills include: policy analysis, database creation and wrangling, creative and scientific writing, statistics (R), Python, environmental science, and biology with a concentration in ecosystem science and conservation. My personal skillsets include: leadership, project management, communication, self-starting, ability to work well both independently and in team environments, and problem-solving.
