About Claire Manley

I am passionate about the human-animal bond and its potential to foster paradigm shifts in both micro-and macro- socio-ecological systems. Examining systems of power while developing authentic connections through experiential human-animal interactions can provide insight into how humans relate to each other, animals, and the environment. Ideally, clients can better understand their psyches, positions, communities, and relationships with greater empathy and nuance, applying change that is meaningful on individual and collective levels. I am certified through the post-Master’s Equine Assisted Mental Health program via Denver University’s Institute for Human and Animal Connection, and spent two years working with clients at an equine facility to foster human-animal bonds using evidence-based psychotherapy practices. Currently, I work at a private practice in Lake Bluff and see clients of all ages and backgrounds. Belonging to the IC-Race Lab during and after my experience at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology has been a once in a lifetime experience. The IC-Race Lab is a scholar-activist research lab that explores topics such as ethnic/racial identity, resistance to oppression, liberatory praxis, and cultural strengths. I am grateful to have been invited to participate in published works and conference presentations on such topics. Our research also explores the unique opportunities that mentorship provides to counselors-in-training regarding healthy White Racial Identity Development (Helms, 2008). I believe it is vital to engage clients’ treatment objectives with cultural competency and mindful awareness of broader forms of systemic oppression so clients can feel safe expressing their whole selves as they embark on pathways of healing and liberation. Certifications and Licenses-Certified Equine Assisted Mental Health practitioner through Denver University's Institute for Human and Animal Connections (IHAC)-Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) through state of IL for 6 years-Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) through IL obtained in 2024. I adore music and find profound joy in playing guitar, singing, and playing in two local bands. Music is a wonderful gateway to community. Prior to counseling, I was a horseback riding instructor. Roles included organizing camps, parties, and community events centered around horses. I developed an early childhood riding program called Trotting Tots that integrated motor and verbal learning on horseback in a safe environment.
