About Clare Howley

Libraries have been part of my life for as long as I can remember. My local public library was crucial during my teenage years. If you don’t count weekly trips to check out books as a kid, I first got involved with libraries when I started volunteering through my local library’s teen advisory board. When I was struggling, I was able to create meaningful peer relationships and develop leadership skills through my volunteer work. I truly credit the public library and the local librarian for providing a stable place. That same local librarian would eventually send me the application that jump started my career in libraries. I hold a passion for many things, but if I were to narrow down some critical areas, it would be curbing the digital divide, child and adolescent learning needs, and prioritizing community building. I find that no matter what position a person may find themselves in, they have an opportunity to be a leader. As someone who has been privileged to have mentors in my life who taught me what I know, I hope to do the same for those around me. A manager of mine told me we have a responsibility to make the path easier for those who follow after us, and I’ve really taken that to heart. In my personal time, I find it crucial to experience life as much as possible. School takes up a good chunk of time, but with some good time management and an up-to-date calendar (sprinkled with self-care), life can still be enjoyable. I love hiking with my fiancé, chilling with my two cats, chatting with friends and family, or playing video games. If I’m doing none of those things, I’m in my office doing some craft or art something. I love to travel solo or with loved ones, and can’t wait to continue exploring as life expands.
